DSM Airport Takes Flight with an Innovative New Website

The Des Moines International Airport offers a convenient and unique experience for local travelers. With a rebranded look and plans to expand their offerings with big renovations, this was the perfect time for a new DSM Airport website design. The client wanted an updated website that reflected their forward-thinking and innovation as they made updates and showcased their involvement in the Des Moines community. Our team was thrilled when we were chosen as the creative web design agency to bring their dreams to life!

Our goal was to produce an eye-catching design that was simple to navigate with need-to-know information easily accessible. We also wanted the client to be able to quickly make updates as they pleased by utilizing Slate, a user-friendly content management system.

The Airport’s Web Design & User Experience Soars After Launch

Numerous airport web designs lack a truly intuitive user experience because the airport knows many people rely on other sites to book flights. DSM Airport is proud to be the exception and wants to help their visitors take flight. To do so, Blue Compass developers incorporated third-party APIs that show flight and parking data, giving users up-to-date information in a helpful side-dashboard solution.

UX Research

Our UX team prepared for take-off by starting the project with user experience (UX) research. This research helped identify how users got to the most important pages and understand pain points along the user journey. After analyzing the UX data, we developed a strategic content architecture to ensure the main focuses of the website — flight listings, parking availability, direct flight options and amenities within the airport — were the main attractions for visitors of the website.

Web Design & Development

After rebranding their other marketing materials, the DSM Airport team was inspired to refresh the look of their website, and we proposed a creative web design that incorporated their fun color palette throughout the site. Clever web development features provide essential information travelers need when preparing for a trip — in an eye-catching way that enhances the user experience. All designs followed ADA compliance guidelines, so all users can easily find what they’re looking for.

Third-Party Integration

Live updates on flight information and parking availability were top priorities for the Des Moines Airport’s web design. Our web development team used third-party integration methods to connect real-time data in an appealing and easy-to-follow display. This gives users the crucial information they need right on the homepage — no need to navigate to another page or even depart to another site. Users can also filter live flight data by airline or city, or search for flight numbers.

Content Management System

One feature the client loved was working in Slate, a user-friendly content management system (CMS). The custom-built CMS allows the client to easily make changes to the website and add new content. With construction plans underway to expand the local airport with two new terminals, their team knew they’d frequently be updating the airport website design to showcase progress. Slate provides all the tools they need to make the website helpful and effective.
