To Celebrate Blue Compass' Anniversary, We Look at 2007
There’s no getting around it. Today is a good day. Yes, fall is finally in the air, celebrations and holidays are beginning to set in as we head into October, but there’s another very special reason that today, in particular, is a good day, but you’ll see why as you continue to read. First, we are going to look at why the year 2007 was such a notable year.
Numerous memorable things happened, from technology and pop culture jaw-droppers to national news and science shockers. Some things were good, some not-so-good and some turned out to be great.
Let’s stop the chitter-chatter, turn on a little Crank That by Soulja Boy and Stronger by Kanye West (each earning a No. 1 spot on Billboard’s Chart around this time nine years ago), and take a look at what happened in the world during 2007.

Whoopi Goldberg Joined ‘The View’
While ‘The View’ had been on for many years before Whoopi joined the cast, Ms. Goldberg made waves when she replaced the former host, Rosie O’Donnell.
The Spice Girls Launch a Reunion Tour
While 2007 marked the 10-year anniversary of the Spice Girls’ breakup, fans of Scary, Sporty, Posh, Baby and Ginger Spice found a reason to rejoice on Dec. 2, 2007. The girl group launched their reunion tour in Vancouver, Canada.
The Britney Meltdown Begins
It’s the picture seen around the world. After checking herself out of rehab, America’s sweetheart, Britney Spears, found herself in a hair salon late one night in Tarzana, California. When the stylist refused to shave her head, Britney took matters into her own hands and did it herself. This move began the yearlong breakdown of one of the world’s most famous pop stars while the world watched.

Prince’s halftime performance at Super Bowl XLI may be one of the most memorable shows for two reasons. First, it was pouring rain, which is fitting when performing Purple Rain. Second, it was a relatively provocative performance for live television. That said, his performance remains a fan favorite to this day.

After many years of economists expecting it to happen, the housing bubble finally “popped” in 2007. One of the largest subprime lenders in the United States, New Century Financial, filed for bankruptcy in April. But New Century Financial was only the first company to go down, with many following suit.

In July 2007, the seventh and final book of the Harry Potter series, Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows, was released. The book release followed the premiere of the fifth movie, Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix. According to Time Magazine, the book sold a record 8.3 million books within the first 24 hours.
Barry Bonds Breaks a Huge Record
All-star baseball player Barry Bonds broke Hank Aaron’s home run record in 2007, with 756 home runs. Unfortunately for Barry Bonds, he didn’t get to celebrate for very long. A leaked grand jury testimony from 2003 revealed that Bonds had been using steroids, although he denied knowing that steroids were a performance-enhancing drug.
The Unfortunate Upset
This may be more sports focused, but it was probably big (and devastating) news to Blue Compass CEO, Cary Coppola. In 2007, a relatively unknown college football team, Appalachian State, traveled to Michigan for an early season game. While Michigan fans believed this would be an easy win, their hearts soon melted to the floor. Appalachian State blocked a Michigan field goal on the final play to win the game 34-32. Sorry Cary, but here’s the video to prove it.

Can you believe it has been nine years since the first iPhone was released? Customers lined up for days before the June 29th release to get their hands on one of these coveted phones.

In 2007, Microsoft invested a cool $240 million for 1.6 percent stake in Facebook, which included the right for Microsoft to broker the social media site’s international ads. This deal implied that Facebook was worth $15 billion when they were only expected to make $30 million that year.

It’s hard to believe the video game, Rock Band, debuted in 2007. This helped many people realize their rockstar dreams. Whether you wanted to be the lead singer, bass player or the drums, this game (hopefully) made you the star of the living room.
Was This the Biggest Thing to Happen in 2007?
While some of us were working on finishing up high school or acing college exams, Blue Compass co-founders, Drew Harden and Cary Coppola, founded Blue Compass, a two-person start-up, in a basement in the year 2007. Thanks to those two young guys nine years ago, Blue Compass has turned into a leading digital company in the Midwest.
As we celebrate today, now with 26 team members, we can’t help but think about how far Blue Compass has come in nine years. We can only imagine what the next nine years will bring and how Blue Compass will continue to grow in numerous ways.
