Meet Our Newest Digital Marketing Associate: Dan Kurns
My Name is Dan Kurns, and I am the newest Digital Marketing Associate at Blue Compass. I have been a Digital Marketing and Advertising professional for 5 years and am excited to join the Blue Compass team. I strive to grow every day, and I hope to bring my knowledge and expertise to Blue Compass and their clients.
About my Digital Marketing Passion
I knew I wanted to jump into the Digital and Social Media industry in college, where I attended Iowa State University's marketing program, and I leapt into it immediately. I wanted to be able to interact with users on a one-to-one basis every day while still representing brands and companies I loved.
My professional career started out with extended internships at Meredith Corporation and Marsh Insurance Company, and with each opportunity I made sure I was working on digital strategy and implementation. I knew where I wanted to be in the future, so I made the effort to stay in those departments and learn everything I could from HTML and CSS programming to content management and copywriting. They were invaluable experiences.
Shortly after graduating, I moved from Des Moines to a small company in Cedar Falls and there I was able to dive into the digital world head first. I quickly learned how nimble you need to be to maintain a healthy and passionate presence online. Writing content and managing the community of a slot and casino video game company definitely gave me the opportunity to learn everything I wanted to know.
While in that position, I was able to jump into many roles that gave me the skills and expertise for which I was looking. Digital Marketing had me managing vendor accounts, content writing for each of our bi-weekly releases, and interacting with our top players on all social channels. Community Management for social games on Facebook allowed me to be the sole content creator and voice of a 300,000 DAU game. Digital Advertising had me managing user acquisition and retention efforts and testing and implementing new and creative. It was an experience like no other.
When I'm not swimming in digital, you can usually find me out on the Disc Golf course, checking out the local music scene, or catching up with my neverending book list. Like any other digital generation kid out there I also love my video games, spending far too much time in Dark Souls or Destiny.
I am incredibly excited to be joining such a talented team of digitally-minded people. Working with experts in Web, Mobile, SEO (search engine optimization), and Digital Marketing is going to be the most exciting move of my career. I cannot wait to begin learning from them all.
